  1. Spray the litter in the box(s) with litter box odor eliminator spray
  2. Add a half to a cup of Zeolite granules to your fresh litter – Zeolite can be found online or in stores in the fish dept. Also, used to filter ammonia from aquarium water
  3. Add small amounts of activated charcoal to the litter – can be found online or in stores in the fish dept. Also, used to filter ammonia from aquarium water
  4. Add a layer of baking soda to the bottom of the clean litter pan when changing the litter
  5. Remove feces and urine daily – clumping litter is the easiest way to scoop out urine 
  6. Put pet safe plants such as the spider plant in the area where the litter box(s) are. Search online for pet safe plant lists
  7. Dump and clean the litter box weekly with a disinfectant such as pet safe white vinegar to help minimize bacteria growing on the surfaces of the box. Put in a spray bottle and spray it before thoroughly washing it out.

  1. Use a room air purifier that has a HEPA filter to filter out airborne dust, dander, molds, and odors. 
  2. Certain types of cat food will make a cat’s litterbox smell more than others. Changing from one cat food to another can help find one to reduce stench from the litter box. Higher protein foods with smaller amounts of vegetable ingredients can be advantageous as more of the food may be absorbed
  3. Use a litter box with a cover that includes a charcoal filter may be helpful
  4. Use a separate litter box for each cat
  5. Try different brands of litter to see which works best for your needs
  6. Give an automatic, self-cleaning litter box a try. They can make daily cleaning much easier and may help reduce unpleasant smells
  7. Placement of a cat’s litter box – which room, how open the space is, and how well ventilated it is will make a difference in how much you notice linger litter smells.
